Steven Speilberg wants the studio he helped build, Dreamworks, to once again be fully independent and own the films it puts out. However he needs $1 billion in third-party financing to make that dream a reality. At Paramount (DreamWorks’ current partner), Spielberg essentially is a producer and director of films owned by others and barring a complete revision of his arrangement only leaving the studio would allow the uber-director to stake actual ownership claim to his future films.

Spielberg has reportedly allowed a bidding war to begin among studios for the rights to distribute future DreamWorks movies on the recommendation of his advisers. Even though Hollywood Reporter thinks Spielberg hopes to land at Universal.

Paramount, Universal, Disney and Fox are all supposedly in the bidding game. Warner Bros. has sat out the competition so far. No surprise that everyone wants in because Steven Spielberg’s movies always make money.
