Former U.S. figure skating champion Christopher Bowman has died tragically at the age of 40. Christopher Bowman was a crowd pleaser with his flair on the ice, but he was also known for his off-the-ice struggles with drugs and alcohol and other personal problems.
The former child actor who appeared in Little House on the Prairie and Archie Bunker’s Place, died of a suspected drug overdose in a Los Angeles motel on Thursday. Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Jason Lee said Bowman was found in his room by a friend at the Budget Inn in the suburb of North Hills. Police then responded to a call about midday. Lee said the case had been forwarded to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office because there were no signs of foul play.
“He just passed away in his sleep,” Bowman’s mother, Joyce, told the Detroit Free Press. “His friend told me that he was fine. He just went to bed and didn’t wake up.”
Bowman, who was known as Bowman the Showman, won the U.S. title in 1989 and 1992, finished second at the 1989 world championships and third in 1990. He also skated in the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics, finishing seventh in 1988 and fourth in 1992.
