Ryan Reynolds' pal Elizabeth Banks says he announced his engagement to Scarlett Johansson via text message!

"I texted him to say, 'Are you really engaged or is this a joke?'" she told Usmagagzine.com at the Alexander McQueen flagship boutique opening in West Hollywood on Tuesday.

"And he said, 'Yes, we're really engaged!'" added Banks.

Banks, who co-starred with Reynolds in Definitely, Maybe, is currently filming the President Bush biopic W is Shreveport, Louisiana. (Check out pics from the president's daughter's wedding here.)

Johansson, 23, and Reynolds, 31,, announced their engagement on May 5, the day the actress flashed a three-carat diamond ring estimated to be worth about $30,000 at the Met Costume Ball Gala.
