On Friday morning CNN journalist Richard Quest was arrested in Central Park with methamphetamine in his pocket. Quest is best known for his work on CNN’s late-night international programming and his hour-long show Quest. Originally it was reported that Quest was arrested for being in the park after it was closed… and while that’s technically true, it turns out there’s a lot more to the story than that. According to the New York Post, there was a good deal of kink going on when Quest was arrested – he had a rope around his neck that was also tied to his genitals.
CNN personality Richard Quest was busted in Central Park early yesterday with some drugs in his pocket, a rope around his neck that was tied to his genitals, and a sex toy in his boot, law-enforcement sources said. Quest, 46, was arrested at around 3:40 a.m. after a cop spotted him and another man inside the park near 64th Street, a police source said.
The criminal complaint against Quest said the park was closed at the time - something Quest should have known because of all the signs saying “Park Closed 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.” Quest was initially busted for loitering, the source said. Aside from the oddly configured rope, the search also turned up a sex toy inside of his boot, and a small bag of methamphetamine in his left jacket pocket.
It wasn’t immediately clear what the rope was for.
[From the New York Post]
I’m sure we can all guess a few things that the rope might have been for. How many of us have enjoyed playing Cowboys and Indians in the park? The rope was obviously for some kind of lasso. Or perhaps to wrangle wayward cattle. While I personally have never encountered any member of the bovine family in Central Park, it’s a pretty big place and you never know what animals you’ll stumble upon. It sounds to me like Richard Quest was just following the Boy Scout motto of always being prepared. Last time I checked the Boy Scouts didn’t include any mention of sex toys and meth, but times are changing and I could just be out of the loop.
The other man that was with Quest was given a summons for not having any identification on him. Quest was not charged with lewdness because he wasn’t exposing himself. So for any of you out-of-towners, it’s good to know that it’s perfectly legal to tie ropes around your genitals in public. But not having your I.D. on you might get you in a bit of trouble.
Quest spent most of Friday behind bars while his lawyer negotiated with the district attorney. He agreed to six months of drug counseling, and in return will have the charge dismissed upon successful completion of the drug program. Really, not a bad deal for hording meth and sex toys, when you think about it. If Quest had been caught doing the same thing in a Tad’s Steakhouse, he would have been given applause and a free dinner.

Prev??? PREV??? Do you mean "perv"?
If you're going to insult the man at least do it correctly FFS!
I've no idea who this man is, as I very rarely get to watch CNN, but I'm feeling terribly sorry for him. I hope it won't be too difficult for him to rebuild his career

Since when is it anyone's business what a person does under their clothes? It should never have been disclosed that he had that rope... As for the sex toy in his boot, the last time I checked, most places in the U.S. still allowed them. Where the meth is concerned, he was stupid to tell them he had it, and I hope he can get off of it.

Ditto Mairead and Jag. So he takes recreational drugs and has a sex life which some people, it appears, may find salacious. Not my business and not something which should affect his career one iota. Although sadly I suspect it will, judging by the steam coming off the heads of the puritans in other quarters.

I care that CNN has not reported the story and removed all references to it from its Blogs.
Now there is fearless , unbiased reporting of the news.

I love this man. Police needs to find a better thing to do than arresting gay people in Central Park.

While I have no problems with homosexuals, I do have a problem with meth. This is not like weed. This stuff is nasty...look at Amy Winehouse. The guy is a celeb/whatever can't he just call for some kink and weed and have it delivered. He screwed himself over. Who needs a rope after that?

Jaybird - while laughing hard at your musings on the lasso and your worry that you might not be quite as up to date on contemporary Boy Scout practices as you might be, I still say this is the guy's own business. Adult choices with adult consequences.
Other than the small quantity of meth, there's no law-breaking here.

Love the libertarian moralizers here - "oh, it's no one's business, blah blah."
Part of the thrill of having sex in public is the chance of getting caught, with all the humiliation that involves.
If Quest and his partner had met up at his apartment or hotel room and had whatever kind of sex pleased them, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Instead, Quest got his kicks from taking a chance - and I would hazard a guess that this is the not the first time he took that chance - knowing full well what was at stake. This is the result.

I'm really not understanding all the sympathy pouring out to this guy. It's not like the cops kicked in his door and busted him being a pervert - he got caught because he was too dumb/cheap to get a hotel room.
Save your sympathy for people who don't bring situations on themselves.

The law he broke was being in the park after hours. If he had followed that simple rule and used some of that CNN money to take a cab, he wouldn't be fodder for us. Once he did that, the cops had probable cause to search, arrest and otherwise investigate him.
Chances are the rope around his neck leading under his clothes (how did they know it was actually wrapped around his genitals, I wonder?) might've been a tip-off to police that this man already caught breaking the law might possibly be engaging in additional illegal activities, which, as it turns out, he was.
Chances are the cops were about to search him and asked him if he had any weapons/contraband on him, thus the meth admission and the search that revealed the sex toy. I suspect he didn't just blurt it out. Once they found that out, the car search was inevitable.
Sex toys are not illegal, but it is "news", I suppose, and once you've checked the above offenses off your list, sorry, buddy, but you're fair game.
Either way, if by "sad" or "unfair" you folks mean hiLARious, I concur.

tremble, I won't even assume as to what you meant that some Black, deaf blind guy will get his job. He's just a correspondents, not an anchor.
Maybe the black deaf, etc people are more qualified to get the job. He hasn't had a major position there in a while.

2I do not know this Richard quest personally, nor want to, but a friend of mine has a relative that does. I personally not only think hes repulsive to look at, but his sexual preference to me is disgusting, and being on meth and acting out in a public place tells me CNN does not show any real class for even hiring someone like that. my father was right, there are far more nuts running around than locked up. A major network hiring headcases. I don't like that network anyhow, now I dislike it even more.
